A garden gnome is a figurine of a small humanoid creature, usually wearing a pointy
hat and produced for ornamental purposes and has long been known to decorate gardens througout history.
It is said that the garden gnome originated in
19th century Germany, where they became known as Gartenzwerg or "garden dwarf
".
Garden statuary has been common in Europe at least since the Renaissance
during the 15th century.
It has been
suggested by some scholars that the garden gnome is a descendant of the
Greco-Roman fertility god Priapus whose statue was found in ancient
gardens.
